The Destruction of Otres

The end of Otres Beach July 2010.

Many places on Otres Beach have gone due to a development project to turn the beach into a park area. Many places were quite new and the section removed was of a much better standard than what remains now. The place in the last few years had rapidly began to prove itself as a favourite beach destination in Sihanoukville and attracted many visitors from all over the world more than perhaps any other beach in Sihanoukville.

The proposed new park designed to replace the bars and restaurants is not likely to work for the tourism industry. Some of the other beaches such as Independence Beach is after more than 2 years still fenced off, will this be the same for Otres Beach? There has never really been any concrete plans for any of the beaches down here in Sihanoukville unless of course they are major developments which privatize the beach and are only available to those with Money. In 2004 there were plans created by the local government to develop the beach but these seem to have never been acted upon and now a totally different idea has been proposed, much to the disappointment of the many bar & restaurant owners effected by this park. Now it is possible that Otres Beach will lose a great number of return tourists to it's shores as the news fast spreads about this unfortunate end.

This web site is a small tribute to the owners and operators of Otres Beach establishments who made the place what it was.

It was them who gave the beach it's popularity and helped increase the tourism to this area. May all the effected people be proud that they made Otres beach a place on the map and those lucky enough to have visited before will remember it as a growing destination increasing every year.

For the sake of Cambodian tourism in Sihanoukville may this new project work(fingers crossed) and that it will keep growing as it was and hope that it does not fall victim to the large resort style of development accessible only to the wealthy few.

Ask anyone who has spent any time here in Sihanoukville if they have seen a park or public area that is maintained and cleaned and looked after which may give us an example of what they wish to do now on Otres Beach.

It is strange that they wish to make this park in such a remote location and not concentrate on the more developed beach areas first. If the removal of rubbish and the maintenance and upkeep of areas in the more developed parts of Sihanoukville are not up to standard how will they achieve this in a more remote area like Otres beach.

The loss of many local jobs provided by the previous businesses on Otres and the contribution they presented to the Local area economically speaking will be a great loss if the proposed park becomes a failure. In ending there is a saying that "All good things must come to an end" , it is just unfortunate it had to happen so soon on this beautiful section of beach.

May the future be great for those who made this beach what it was and that they do not forget they are the people who put Otres beach on the map.

Lets also hope that the planed Public park is created and the people of cambodia along with the visitors can use it for many many years to come and pray it is not sold off to developers that will make private the beach and leave it available to only the wealthy.
