A Short Story
A friend I have know for quite some time once asked me if when I went away did I purchase Travel Insurance. My reply was Yes I did but I always left it till the last moment. Usually the bags are packed and sitting on the floor the night before traveling then as I go through the final checks I realize Oh Travel Insurance. So I’m straight online to purchase a policy with World Nomads .
“I always remember at the last moment” I said to him So far so good.
I didn’t think much of it until one day I had forgotten to get insurance and As would be expected a lesson was about to be learned. In November 2012 I had a trip booked to Cambodia for 6 months to do some looking around and to catch up with some friends. Tickets were all booked and paid for, Accommodation for 2 weeks down at the beach was all paid for and I was all cashed up and ready to go. Then unexpectedly my Mum was diagnosed with lymphoma and hospitalized no one in the family was able to look after her during her treatment except me. So the trip was cancelled.
All up I lost the money for my flights and Accommodation about $2000 AUD.
Because, Yes you guessed it. I Forgot to buy travel insurance, I lost the flights and accommodation money. The travel insurance would have cost A$180, which, with a $100 excess, I would have been reimbursed around $1,720.
Now, It’s one off the first things on my mind when I am planning a trip away , BUY Travel Insurance. Lesson learned.
My Family & I recommend World Nomads
When my friends, family and myself of course travel (and we travel a fair bit), we all use World Nomads. We have built a trust with them over the years to not let travelers down right when they need them the most.
We all think World Nomad insurance is designed with the independent travelers in mind and that the coverage they offer is a good deal for the price. It’s all done Online, it’s so easy to buy the insurance, make a claim and even extend a policy online which I have had to do a few times. It’s great news if you’re having such a fantastic trip you’ve decided to extend your holiday just that wee bit longer.
The vast majority of travelers will have trouble-free trips throughout Southeast Asia and beyond. But accidents do, happen and although having insurance won’t stop the problems that may occur or make them go away, it does make them so much easier to deal with and gives you a great piece of mind. At the end of the day, buying travel insurance is a personal decision but we all feel it is of high importance and highly recommended for any trip away.
Travel insurance: simple & flexible
You can buy, extend and claim online, even after you’ve left home. Travel insurance from WorldNomads.com is available to people from over 150 countries. It’s designed for adventurous travellers with cover for overseas medical, evacuation, baggage and a range of adventure sports and activities.
What does travel insurance cover?
Apart from medical care, travel insurance can protect you in the case of lost or stolen luggage and personal effects, trip cancellation, personal liability, funeral expenses and expatriation ( in a worst case scenario, dying overseas can be very expensive), emergency dental treatment and evacuation back to your country of residence. There are also a number of add on extras that will cover items like expensive cameras, laptops and iPads and more adventuresome pursuits, although for many travelers, a general travel insurance policy should provide a good starting point.
That said, bear in mind that not all travel insurance policies are born equal. As our recommended provider World Nomads says:“The best single piece of advice we can give is to READ THE POLICY WORDING CAREFULLY. Let’s repeat that again: Take your time. Have a cup of tea or coffee. Sit down quietly and read the policy fine print. Especially the exclusions.”
Pay attention to these areas when you’re fighting your way through the small print, keep in mind the following potential pitfalls.
* Dangerous activities
Many insurers consider motorcycling, diving, parachuting, Kite surfing and many other largely safe activities as hugely dangerous pursuits. Falling off your motorbike, like my friend did, breaking your ankle and collar bone then spending a few days in hospital will only be more painful if your insurer tells you the bill is all yours.
* Country exclusions
There’s no point in having travel insurance for your trip to Cambodia if it doesn’t cover Cambodia.
* Working exclusions
Will you be working during your trip? If so, check that teaching English in Phnom Penh or Pouring some drinks in a bar on Street 136 won’t void your travel insurance.
* Maximum amount per item
You don’t want your $1,500 photographic equipment stolen only to find out your insurer has a maximum payout per item of $250.
* Excessive excess
The excess is the amount you have to pay to lodge a travel insurance claim. If the stolen goods part of your policy has an excess of $100 and you have an item worth $130 stolen, you must pay the first $100. Some travel policies have excesses so high it is hardly ever worth claiming.
* Got a ticket home?
Most travel insurers, including World Nomads, work on the assumption that you have a ticket home. If you don’t have one, be sure to read the small print carefully.
Travel tips from World Nomads
Here are a few things for you to consider when selecting your insurance. Make sure that you will be covered on your adventure.
It’s no fun if you fall ill before you leave and cannot go on your trip. To claim though, you have to buy your insurance policy when you buy your trip. Not all insurance policies cover cancellation, so please read the policy wording relevant to you situation carefully.
*Lost or stolen equipment
Most travel insurance policies have a per-item value limit. So make sure it’s high enough to cover your gear or select a policy that allows you to increase the limit.
*Medical expenses over and above evacuation:
Check that your cover includes emergency treatment while away and transport to bring you home. remember that insurance providers will usually insist on getting you home as soon as you are fit enough to travel.
Look carefully at what your policy covers. You may find that you are not covered to do all of the adventurous activities that you are planning while you’re away.
Accidents do happen unfortunately .If it’s found to be you at fault and someone decides to sue you, you will want to make sure you are covered.
